Interview of Pierre P.
"When working on a standard portal, we can easily reach 30 % time saved."

Decembre 14, 2000

It is now a few months that Pentalog High Tech ensures the integration of The Port, the solution for creation and management of website portals launched by Inet.

Project manager, Pierre P. highlights the various advantages of The Port.

Aleth D. :
Pierre, you are the project manager for the Integration of The Port to the CERIB. Would you shortly tell us what is this all about ?
Pierre P. : The Institute of studies and research of Concrete Industries wanted to share, within its Intranet, resources coming from diverse existing applications and that were common to every users in order to cross and multiply possibilities of requests. Its major wish was to implement rigorous management of rights of access to this knowledge database.
Aleth D. : Why The Port ?
Pierre P. : The Port is a generic enterprise portal. Thus it allows to transversally access to information, through Intranet, Extranet or the Internet. If you want The Port to meet a specific need, you just have to parameterise it.
To tell shortly, when building a portal with The Port, you just have declare the different profiles, personalise the interface with the colours of the company and link information sources and applications you want to allocate to the portal to make it operational.

Aleth D. : Thus, creating a portal website with The Port is a piece of cake...
P.P. : Almost. Instead of entering the code, testing and debugging and testing again features such as the rights of access to the reference base - which constitute the core module of such tools - you just parameterise them.
And it is the same for the realisation of the pontoon (the navigation bar) and the interface : instead of drawing html pages and convert them in jsp or java, The Portmaster (administration tool of The Port) integrates elements of the graphical schedule and understand XML parameters in order to build pages with colours of the company automatically.
This way, every pages of the intranet wear same colours and layouts.

Aleth D. : Ok, to summarise, using The Port enables you to work faster...
P.P. : Yes, time savings are drastic actually.
When talking about the CERIB precisely, we are not saving as much time as building a standard portal, nevertheless time savings amount 15 %.
When working on a standard portal, we can easily reach 30 % time saved. This time we save is obviously interesting for developers but indeed for the customers who get financial benefit.

Aleth D. : And can you tell the system is reliable ?
P.P. : Question of reliability is solved in the same circumstances as a classical development : Pentalog High Tech sets and realises a rigorous testing plan.

A.D. : And security ?
P.P. : Access to The Port and management of rights are under control of The City, the functional core module of The Port. Elements of security as encoding or those linked with system intrusion are managed by the active elements of the network. As The Port is multi-platform, compliancy is immediate. Further in the Cerib project.
