Embedded Systems Business Line

With over 300 employees, the Embedded Systems Business Line assists our clients in their R&D and embedded development activities in order to allow them to meet objectives such as increasing their processing capacity, cost reduction, as well as speeding up the time-to-market of their products.

Our Services

Pentalog High Tech offers an entire range of services:

  • Design (help in writing requirements, in creating the architecture and in designing the chip (ASIC) for the different modules that make up the equipment)
  • Embedded development (from firmware to embedded software, going through all the layers)
  • Software and hardware integration (from the lower layer to application software)
  • Validation tests (functional tests, configuration tests, fault tolerance tests, integration tests, non-regression tests, load tests etc.)
  • Third-party maintenance (bug analysis and solving, upgrade processing)
  • Chip design (Digital Design and Verification (Verilog and VHDL coding and RTL, Design check by Vera, Specman, C++), RTL to GDSII, Analog circuit design, CAD/CAE)

Field of application

"Embedded Systems" are autonomous electronic and information systems that make up the electronic equipment used on a daily basis, such as telephones, cars, planes, satellites etc. More precisely, embedded systems are found in:

  • Mobile terminals (PDAs, smartphones, PC tablets, magnetic card readers etc.).
  • Boxes that integrate software (gateways, access points, routers, proxy etc.).
  • Complex equipment (industrial robots, ATMs , coffee machines, home automation etc.).
  • Specialized applications (car industry, aeronautics, aerospace engineering).

Our Competences

Our teams regularly work on:

Architecture
  • user interface (UI):
  • No user interface:
  • Dedicated to a single task
  • Simple user interface:
  • Uses buttons, LEDs, graphic or character LCDs with a simple menu
  • Complex graphic user interface:
  • Resembles modern desktop operating systems (e.g.: radars)
  • Ensures flexibility while minimizing the space used by employing a graphic screen with touch sensing or screen-edge buttons
  • Remote user interface (extended capacities):
  • Avoids display-related costs (by using serial or network interfaces)
  • Simplifies the compilation of card corrections
  • Exports the rich user interface onto the PC (e.g.: an embedded web server that functions on an embedded device - IP camera or a network router)
  • Processors:
  • Ordinary microprocessors (µP):
  • A great deal of basic CPU architectures
  • For ex.: Von Newmann, RISC, CISC, VLIW, ...
  • Dedicated microcontrollers (µC): The peripherals chosen for a microcontroller may allow to reduce its size and cost
  • System on a chip (SoC) :
  • Includes a complete system which consists of several processors,
  • Multipliers, cache and interfaces on a single chip

  • Can be implemented as an "application-specific integrated circuit" (ASIC) or can use programmable logical circuits (FPGA).
  • Embedded operating systems:
  • the most common, e.g.: DOS, Linux, NetBSD, ...
  • real-time operating systems, e.g.: Micro/OS-II, QNX or VxWorks
  • Peripherals:
  • Serial Communication Interfaces (SCI): RS-232, RS-422, RS-485 etc
  • Synchronous serial communication interface: I2C, SPI, SSC and ESSI (Enhanced Synchronous Serial Interface)
  • Universal Serial Bus (USB)
  • Multimedia cards (SD Cards, Compact Flash, ...)
  • Networks: Ethernet, Controller Area Network, LonWorks, etc.
  • Timers: PLL(s), Capture/Compare and Time Processing Units
  • Discrete IO: aka General Purpose Input/Output (GPIO)
  • Analog to Digital/Digital to Analog (ADC/DAC)
  • Debugging: JTAG, ISP, ICSP, BDM Port, BITP, and DP9 ports.

Resources

Apart from an IT infrastructure that can meet all project needs of our customers in terms of performance and security (see "Our Infrastructure"), Pentalog High Tech can make laboratories available to our customers:

  • Laboratory for testing and measuring multimedia equipment (audio analyzer, accoustic chamber, logic analyzer, network simulator, microphones etc.)
  • Laboratory for testing and measuring 2G / 3G telecommunication equipment (GPRS, EDGE, GSM, TDMA, WCDMA / HSPA measurements)

RF hardware laboratory - Audio laboratory and acoustic cabin (equipment offered by one of our prestigious clients)

We have the capacity to adjust to our customers' specific needs.

All our services can be carried out on all our nearshore/offshore sites (Romania, Republic of Moldova, Vietnam) (see "Agencies").

Tools

  • Firmware: Compilers, linkers, assemblers and debuggers
  • Emulators
  • Validation CRC checksums
  • Math Workbench: Scilab / Scicos, MATLAB / Simulink, EICASLAB, MathCad, Mathematica, or FlowStone DSP
  • Proprietary language or design tools, or adding functionalities on existing languages, such as Forth or Basic
