With the development of the ICT sector, an impressive number of opportunities have emerged on the market like equal possibilities for everyone to participate in the creation of innovative technologies and the promotion of continuous learning. If we, as a society, want to evolve, then the only solution is to make the IT an accessible & attractive environment for all kinds of people.

IT industry would thrive and would expand at a faster pace if more girls & women chose tech as a career path. Diversity in IT means not just a progressive workplace, it will also be a catalyst for innovation. Pentalog shares this view, so we are proud to support Django Girls community.

Pentalog & Django Girls: Bringing IT to Women

How can we get more ladies to join IT or at least become passionate about technology? The first step is to teach them the basic stuff, as follows they will get acquainted with the subject & hopefully create their own path that goes hand in hand with STEM.

On this occasion, PentaGuys and PentaGirls booked their calendars for 29-30th June to meet talented women at Tekwill in Chisinau, Moldova.

  • “I applied to Django Girls out of pure curiosity for coding. This course helped me understand that coding is much easier than it seems. Even if you are not familiar with the field, you can create your product from scratch. After the workshop, I will continue to grow in this field and will combine it with my field of activity.” Anastasia C., mentee

django girls - women in tech

Be great together: PentaGuys & PentaGirls joined their forces to inspire participants to become part of the tech world at the Django Girls.

The main challenge was to bring tech to areas and people directly not related to IT. Our goal was to gather women who weren’t specifically from the IT industry but were engaged in different fields. All of them were motivated to start their IT journeys and were ready to have an impact on their communities. This way, 30 adventurous participants joined our program to enrich their skills and set a base for a new beginning.

  • “Django Girls is a great event to quickly learn the basics of the web development using a Framework while having fun with cool and smart mentors and other fellow girls willing to learn.” Maria A., mentee

Girls were assisted by 8 mentors who guided them through this process, 6 being from Pentalog and other 2 from other companies. They helped our participants to get into the basics of:

  • HTML

  • CSS

  • Python

  • Django

Dream! Code! Create!

  • “This event was very exciting, I got a new experience as a mentor and I’m glad I was part of this team. It was a little bit difficult to explain some technical concepts to people who had no technical background, but after all, definitely, it was a fulfilling experience. Participants were active and keen on knowledge, which is very important for such events.” Nicoleta L., mentor

How did the program take place? Mentors presented some information that would help mentees to have a better understanding of how they can start coding. Afterward, girls were working using tutorials provided by the Django Girls community, while mentors were assisting them by solving issues that blocked their work.

  • “I have always had an impression that a lot of people that aren’t involved in the IT field may have a wrong impression about programming, they think it is boring, very complicated and only a geek thing. My mission as a mentor at DjangoGirls was to prove that programming can be so much fun, it’s easy to make the first step and everyone can give it a try. I hope that I accomplished my goal.” Adrian Z., mentor

By the end of the workshop, most of the girls published their sites to www.pythonanywhere.com platform, thus making it accessible worldwide.

Django Girls took place with the support of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and the Government of Sweden in the framework of the project “Development of Moldova ICT Excellence Center” Tekwill, implemented by Moldovan Association of ICT Companies (ATIC).

Don’t limit yourself! Try and you are not going to regret it!

Django Girls has started a volunteer-based initiative, now it has expanded to 98 countries, including Moldova. You might wonder: “Does it really matter?” or “Is it worth your time?”.

This wonderful community, that inspired women to dive fearlessly into programming, has already reached 19 700+ women all over the world.

In the meantime, Pentalog supports both ladies who are our employees, as well as those who have a chance to join us later. At Pentalog 55% of our executive positions are taken by women and 65% of our girls work in the IT production.
