Integrating SEPTEN (Services Etudes et Projets Thermiques Et Nucléaires) and more specifically the division of reactor physics (Neutronics and Hearts Design), I carried out a calibration study of 1300 MWe nuclear reactor protection systems.

Context:

The nuclear power plants are equipped with systems for monitoring and protecting the reactor's core, based on the real-time monitoring of physical quantities characteristic of the core's state.
If the values ​of these quantities exceed pre-established physical limits, alarms are emitted and automatic actions are applied in order to bring these quantities back into the normal operating range.
Periodic testing ensures the correct activation of these signals, by applying fictitious measures. For this, we resort to iterative algorithms that converge on the measures to be applied (PROTEC module)

My mission was to study and then optimize the algorithms searching for the test vectors, in order to guarantee their convergence, regardless of the conditions of use of these algorithms (physical state of the heart, values of trigger thresholds of output signals, etc.).

I therefore designed and developed a multithreaded application in Python for this purpose, the goal being to first ensure a high level of confidence, and in some particular cases, apply the necessary corrections in the source code in C ++ to conform to reference results.

This application has also been used to carry out similar studies but with different threshold values. Recently, it was very useful for the nuclear plant engineering center (CIPN : a reputed unit in Marseille). EDF can now anticipate the impact of changes in thresholds, calibration or simulation methods of the Integrated Digital Protection System (SPIN), making sure that the test vectors are robust or not, and whether it needs to modify the module PROTEC.

This internship allowed me to immerse myself in the field of Business Intelligence and Data Vizualisation.
As a member of the team Method & Tools, I worked on the design and development of a web application (full-stack development : back-end and front-end) as intranet. It centralizes Key Process Indicators of the Verification & Validation service (V&V) and monitoring to improve their performance.
It is especially useful for managers and design engineers facilitating reporting.
