Our newest client is a non-profit foundation on a mission to empowering students worldwide with growth-oriented learning programs. This US-based charitable foundation offers a learning management system, that ensure active learning, feedback and focused skilled practice.

We are looking for a Ruby on Rails Engineer with seniority and AWS skills, who can use his back-end know-how to take ownership of all software development and issue resolution for our client’s APIs powering four web and mobile applications. These apps are connected to the foundation’s platform, used in schools in the US and overseas. 

In this role, you will report to the Platform Director and collaborate closely with all others on the Platform Team and immediate stakeholders. 

Job requirements

  • 5+ years of software development experience, or relevant equivalent experience ;
  • Strong experience with Ruby on Rails (at least 5 years), automated testing frameworks, and related tools typically used for server-side application development;
  • Bachelor’s degree preferred, with a focus on computer science;
  • Professional experience with relational databases (at least 3 years of AWS know-how);
  • 2+ years of experience using Git in a workplace environment;
  • Strong proficiency with Agile software development methodologies ;
  • Experience with application performance monitoring and log analytics tools (e.g. New Relic);
  • Strong attention to detail;
  • High standard of quality and ability to evaluate your own work critically; 
  • Commitment to timeliness and deadlines established by the organization;
  • Ability to work very efficiently on your own, and know when to reach out and collaborate; 
  • Willingness to work productively with interdisciplinary teams; 
  • Eagerness to develop and share new ideas;
  • Ability and commitment to give and receive thoughtful and respectful feedback and critiques; 
  • Excellent communication skills and very good English language skills. 


As a Ruby on Rails Engineer, you will be responsible for the following activities and outcomes: 

  • Review/ analyze requirements, designs, and specifications and provide appropriate feedback, from a backend engineering perspective to the product design team, to reflect backend priorities and needs (the reviews include the “sanity check” events that are essential to the client’s software development process);
  • Develop suitable architectural models for integrating front-end applications with the client’s backend infrastructure, and work closely with other engineers on finalizing such architectural plans;
  • Implement prioritized features using approved designs and the accepted architectural approach (the features will be implemented with a high degree of fidelity to product designs and functional specifications, and high levels of code test coverage); 
  • Resolve issues identified during the QA process quickly and effectively, working closely with the QA Engineers;
  • Implement performance monitoring tools and the necessary infrastructure to monitor app stability and performance on an ongoing basis, and improve stability and performance as necessary;
  • On an ongoing basis, research best practices for web application engineering, and propose any practices that could reduce cycle times and/or increase product quality to the platform team leadership.
